J. Mark Hutchins has spent more than 30 years fueling his passion for matching people’s interests with impactful projects. While serving as a manager and leader of complex organizations throughout his career, he has championed efforts that have raised millions of dollars from private and government sources for projects supporting business development, academic efforts, athletic programs and facilities, religious and civic groups and other social causes, and that have been used to enhance the lives of people and promote projects that foster community growth and pride.
He has served Louisiana Tech University, The University of Texas at Austin, and Mississippi State University, and as associate vice president, vice president and interim president at Wood College (MS), Murray State University (KY) and Tennessee Tech University. He has also served in a variety of roles in fund raising and marketing on the boards of civic and church organizations including chambers of commerce, Habitat for Humanity, school and youth athletic teams, and churches in Mississippi, Kentucky and Tennessee. He led successful campaigns at United Methodist Churches in Starkville, MS ($1 million), and Cookeville, TN ($3.6 million) and has been the chair of numerous successful annual stewardship/budget campaigns.
Hutchins has made presentations across the country on a variety of topics including planning and management in capital fund raising, strategic planning, solicitation strategies, planned giving for annual giving professionals, management issues, internet fund-raising, two-year college fund raising strategies, small shop fund-raising strategies and establishing priorities for fund-raising success. Additionally, he has taught in the Tennessee Governor’s School for Information Technology Leadership and is familiar with a wide variety of donor management technologies including Blackbaud, iModules, and others.
Hutchins currently teaches an 8-session course on leadership and ethics for select students from the community and leads two sessions each year in leadership for high schools across the region.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in business and a master’s degree in human relations and supervision (Organizational Psychology) from Louisiana Tech University. He has co-authored an accreditation study for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, designed and created magazines and designed a host of materials that support money raising efforts.
